Circular reasoning

چکیده

Good informal arguments offer justification for their conclusions. They go wrong if the justifications double back, rendering the arguments circular. Circularity, however, is not necessarily a single property of an argument, but may depend on (a) whether the argument repeats an earlier claim, (b) whether the repetition occurs within the same line of justification, and (c) whether the claim is properly grounded in agreed-upon information. The experiments reported here examine whether people take these factors into account in their judgments of whether arguments are circular and whether they are reasonable. The results suggest that direct judgments of circularity depend heavily on repetition and structural role of claims, but only minimally on grounding. Judgments of reasonableness take repetition and grounding into account, but are relatively insensitive to structural role. © 2002 Cognitive Science Society, Inc. All rights reserved.

Circular Arguments, Begging the Question and the Formalization of Argument Strength

Recently Oaksford and Hahn (2004) proposed a Bayesian reconstruction of a classic argumentation fallacy Locke’s ‘argument from ignorance.’ Here this account is extended to what is probably the most well-known of all argumentation fallacies: circular reasoning or ‘begging the question’. A Bayesian analysis is shown to clarify when and where circular reasoning is good or bad, and how seeming para...

A lattice-theoretic framework for circular assume-guarantee reasoning

We develop an abstract lattice-theoretic framework within which we study soundness and other properties of circular assume-guarantee (A-G) rules constrained by side conditions. We identify a particular side condition, non-blockingness, which admits an intelligible inductive proof of the soundness of circular A-G reasoning. Besides, conditional circular rules based on non-blockingness turn out t...

A Framework for Contract-Based Reasoning: Motivation and Application

In [13], we have introduced a framework for contract-based reasoning parametrized, among others, by a notion of behaviors and a notion of composition of such behaviors. Our aim is to separate clearly between properties of contracts that are speci c to a given framework and properties that apply to an entire class of contract-based veri cation frameworks. In particular, we think that soundness o...

Circular Coinduction

Circular coinduction is a technique for behavioral reasoning that extends cobasis coinduction to speci cations with circularities. Because behavioral satisfaction is not recursively enumerable, no algorithm can work for every behavioral statement. However, algorithms using circular coinduction can prove every practical behavioral result that we know. This paper proves the correctness of circula...

Circular Compositional Reasoning about Liveness

Compositional proofs about systems of many components often involve apparently circular arguments. That is, correctness of component A must be assumed when verifying component B, and vice versa. The apparent circularity of such arguments can be resolved by induction over time. However, previous methods for such circular compositional reasoning apply only to safety properties. This paper present...

Jochen Briesen University of Konstanz

Pretheoretically we hold that we cannot gain justification or knowledge through an epistemically circular reasoning process. Epistemically circular reasoning occurs when a subject forms the belief that p on the basis of an argument A, where at least one of the premises of A already presupposes the truth of p. It has often been argued that process reliabilism does not rule out that this kind of ...
